The Little Refugee by Anh Do
Before reading the text:
Use the butcher's paper on the easel.
Ask students to think of as many reasons as they can why people move from their homes and write them on the page.
Sort the list into those reasons where people move voluntarily and those where people move against their will. This will help them see the difference between a migrant and a refugee and more fully understand the meaning of refugee.
Read the story
Read the story. pausing where appropriate to explain what is happening and why and to discuss the feelings and emotions experienced by Anh Do and the members of his family.
Some things to consider
You will probably have taken up most of your time in reading the story today. If you need to discuss these questions back in the classroom, then that's ok. Anh Do's story is very thought provoking!

As a class, list the situations that are encountered by Anh Do’s family on their journey by boat. Distribute a different situation to different groups and ask them to record answers to the following questions:
The colour ranges from sepia to brightly coloured drawings. Why do you think the illustrator did this? What feelings or moods do the different colours convey? The drawings of historical events are more realistic ones and the drawings of Anh Do's personal family are more child-like. I wonder why the illustrator did this?

- Who or what might you be worried about?
- Who could you help or who could help you in this situation?
- Write down 10-15 things that you would take with you if you had to flee your home like Anh Do. They must be able to fit into a backpack and be carried by you.
