Before Reading
We know that Anzac Day is all about remembering those who gave their lives up for their country. It's about keeping alive the memory of those who did something for all of us, even though we may not know them personally.
Sometimes it is a story book that can help us to 'feel' what it was really like for the soldiers at the time and what they went through. We can also learn how the families felt when they were left behind by someone who went to war.
Harry and the Anzac Poppy is all about keeping alive the memory of Harry's Great-Grandfather who served in the First World War. Harry's Grandmother has kept the letters that her father wrote from the War all those years ago. They are the last memories that she has of her dad and she shares these with her grandson, Harry. It is Harry's only link with his Great-Grandfather. What a wonderful way to keep his memory alive.
At the end, Harry promises never to forget.
What are some of the ways that we can learn about what it was like in the war?
Is it important to remember and to have special ceremonies of remembrance? Why?
